Archers, meaning bowmen. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, they often formed an impassable barrier. Excellent defenders of fortresses and fortifications, on the battlefield they effectively thinned the enemy ranks. Our chess set is inspired by the bravery of archers—the pawns. Masters in this field were the mythical god Apollo and Artemis. The second line consists of figures of Greek gods—the king and queen; the bishop and knight are warriors. The rook, symbolized by a column, refers to ancient architecture.
