MichaelSerge Holiday Series – Unforgettable Souvenirs from European Countries

The Roman philosopher and writer Seneca the Younger divided travelers into two groups. The first are those who want to escape problems and worries. The second group consists of people traveling out of genuine curiosity about the world. They have a specific goal, get to know foreign cultures, and travel the world to gain knowledge, not to escape from themselves.

During the holiday season, European countries welcome a huge number of tourists. Surely, many people from both of the above groups will be among them. Regardless of which group we identify with, the memories we bring back from our travels often stay with us for a lifetime.

What reminds us of beautiful moments are also souvenirs – often very personal items that we bring back in our suitcase. Material things can have great personal, symbolic, and even spiritual significance. They remind us of happiness, important life changes, growth, gaining knowledge, and discovering new paths.

We will start our holiday journey with MichaelSerge in Portugal, a country located at the southwestern edge of Europe. A country bordered on one side by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and on the other by Spain.

While in this picturesque place, it’s worth buying beautiful cork products – shoes, handbags, or hats. The lightness and comfort of this material are not all. The original design and colorful hues will remain in the colorful palette of our memories for a long time.

And what does the rooster have to do with the Portuguese?

This folkloric symbol, associated with luck and justice, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Portuguese folk culture. At market stalls, you can find figurines, mugs, or beautiful tablecloths embroidered with the image of the rooster. Invite the lucky rooster into your home and let it stay with you longer.

Among the most beautiful souvenirs brought from Portugal are original designs inspired by azulejos – characteristic Portuguese ceramic tiles. These motifs can be found on jewelry – earrings, pendants, and bracelets. Bags, keychains, or wallets with tile patterns make beautiful accessories for both women’s and men’s wardrobes.

Cutting boards or napkins with blue and white patterns will be the perfect complement to any kitchen. Cooking surrounded by such a rich palette of colors can inspire the preparation of many Mediterranean dishes.

However, let us not forget that Portugal is primarily a country located by the Atlantic Ocean.

For centuries, the Portuguese have been and still are connected to the sea – distant, mysterious, and full of unknown spaces. The history of this country is inseparably linked with sailing, shipbuilding, and great sea expeditions.

Sailors used compasses and astrolabes. They explored the world and used the knowledge gained to find the right direction and safely navigate the distant waters of the Atlantic.

Sea voyages changed the world and the way reality was perceived. The development of sailing allowed people to discover new lands, learn about other cultures, and create new trade routes.

Who hasn’t heard of Vasco da Gama’s voyages? This Portuguese sailor and explorer is remembered in history as the first European to reach India by sea from Europe, sailing around the southern tip of Africa. His expedition became one of the most important events of the Age of Discovery.

However, it is worth remembering that the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe was led by Ferdinand Magellan, which began in 1519. Magellan himself did not complete the journey – he died in the Philippines – and the expedition was completed by the crew led by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

Today, we can preserve memories in the form of beautiful, unique souvenirs. Being far from our beloved seaside towns, we can also choose items that will remind us of the sea, travels, and discovering the world.

Beautiful compasses, sextants, and ship models can become exceptional souvenirs for those who love maritime atmospheres and long journeys.

The MichaelSerge.com store offers a wide maritime selection, where you can find items inspired by the history of sailing and great discoveries.

Adding an engraving makes such an item even more personal. It can be a souvenir of a specific trip, an important date, a special place, or a symbol of one’s own path. A personal amulet for the journey ahead – not only the sea journey but also the spiritual one.
